SETTING BACKGROUND

"wow that sure was fucked up" —Zita, on Evangelion 3.0+1.0

The Evangelion franchise deals with the conflict between humanity and mysterious monstrous beings known as Angels. The setting is a somewhat post-apocalyptic version of Earth, largely rebuilt after a cataclysmic event called Second Impact in the year 2000 but still scarred by it. An organization called NERV is fighting off the Angels to prevent another Impact using giant humanoid robots called Evangelion units, which are piloted by teenagers because Reasons. Some people are genuinely trying to preserve humanity, others are secretly trying to cause another Impact for their own reasons, and everything is generally pretty messed up. Shit gets weird and abstract sometimes.

Weirdness that affects only Kaworu: the story of Evangelion "repeats" and he's a timelooper who has experienced countless versions of it, including both the original anime and the Rebuild movies, as well as countless other unspecified variations. Since the Evangelion franchise has tons of different official adaptations and spinoffs, I'm considering them all "canon" from Kaworu's perspective as past timeloops for the sake of fun and me not wholesale headcanoning all of that.

PERSONALITY

Kaworu tends to have a very inhuman feel to him, mostly because (and this should barely count as a spoiler anymore, given the age of the series) he's an Angel. By the rules of the canon, this means something a bit more sinister and threatening to the human race than the normal definition of the word, but Kaworu tends to embody the classic idea of it; he's kind, gentle, patient, and absolutely overflowing with love and understanding. He's an old soul in every sense of the phrase – literally speaking, he's existed for a great many years across many lifetimes, but even those who know nothing about his true nature can tell he seems older than his apparent age. He has an unflappably calm sort of maturity and a poetic manner of speech, neither of which makes him seem at all like a normal teenager, but that's alright because he never seems to be trying all that hard to be "normal" anyway.

Notably, he can seem a bit detached or aloof despite his generally pleasantness. However much he appreciates humanity, he clearly recognizes that he's not truly part of it, and so he hold himself back. He tends to act more as an observer and even speaks more in universal terms than personal ones, like he doesn't believe he has a place among others outside of what's necessary to do what he has to.

Kaworu's very curious, especially where things related to humanity are concerned. He's fascinated by all of mankind's creations and thoughts and loves learning about them, especially creative endeavors. Music is his obvious favorite subject, but he shows an appreciation for other fields as well, like literature and cosmetology. He treats everything with some measure of enthusiasm, overjoyed just to see and understand what humans are capable of thinking and creating and feeling. He doesn't seem to always fully understand everything that humans do and the way the society works – or, more likely, he's just not concerned enough with "fitting in" to do things that seem unnecessary to him.

The most important factor of Kaworu's motivations and growth through the whole franchise is the series' protagonist, Shinji. In Kaworu's own words, meeting Shinji gave his life meaning. He loved Shinji deeply and became determined to bring Shinji real happiness – easier said than done in Evangelion. This canonpoint is actually a weird time in Kaworu's very, very long life. He's spent lifetimes chasing that singlular objective and been through a great deal in pursuit of it. Years of waiting, repeated failure, dying again and again and again. And yet now, at the end of a very long, cyclical story, he's come to terms with the fact that he went about it all the wrong way. He never really understood how to make Shinji happy in the first place, and he was called out as having wanted Shinji's happiness to make him happy. This is the first time he's facing life truly living for himself, and while that great love hasn't faded it's no longer his sole fixation.

As a bit of extra fun, it's noteworthy that while the Angels of Evangelion don't actually have anything to do with religion (despite the series' love of Judeo-Christian imagery and myth), they do all have official angels' names. Kaworu's "true" name is Tabris, the angel of self-determination — a.k.a. free will. Themes of freedom and choice come up a lot where he's concerned in all the various takes on the series, and he's definitely aware of the significance of his name.

Anyway. As a whole, Kaworu is a pretty YMMV experience. For someone like Shinji, who craves unconditional love, Kaworu is a blessedly comforting presence, all easy affection and acceptance. But for most other characters in the series, he often comes across as unsettling or just plain weird. Either way, he's cool with it.

CANON POWERS
  • A.T. Field: An almost impenetrable force-field, generally invisible until impacted. Kaworu is noted as having the strongest A.T. Field among all the Angels, and weaker Angels are seen shrugging off nukes with ease, so we can assume his is even more ridiculous but it's hard to say exactly how strong his is since we've never actually seen anything penetrate it.
  • Levitation
  • Either some kind of telekinesis or ability to manipulate electronics/objects with his A.T. Field, seen being used to unlock the final gate to Terminal Dogma.
  • Evangelion unit shenanigans (can set his synch rate with them to whatever level he wants and can control Eva units even from outside the cockpit)
  • Some kind of sixth sense for souls or something (can detect a nearby presence from like a mile away and can somehow discern the nature of beings once close enough)
  • Timelooping: Somehow seems to be living through an endless cycle of variations of the Evangelion narrative. It's uncertain whether or not he's actually in control of this because the script is extremely ambiguous about it, please don't make me try to explain this shit.

POWER SELECTION

POWER TYPE
Canon Superpowers

FREEBIE POWERS
His weird sixth sense thing possibly? Unsure if it'd count as a mildly enhanced sense, up to y'all!

GAME POWERS
A.T. Field: He'll retain his A.T. Field, though it will be extremely nerfed. It can only function in the protective sense, so none of his other abilities will work even if one interprets them as being functions of the A.T. Field. Since he won't have any offensive abilities at all, it'll still be an extremely strong barrier, but prolonged assaults by very powerful attacks can potentially break through it. If broken, it'll take a day or two for it to function again, during which time he'll be extra vulnerable not just to physical damage but also to other bodily harm like sunburn, illness, and allergies that he's normally protected from.

ABILITIES
  • Can play both the piano and violin very well
  • Speaks Japanese, English and German
  • Bottomless well of patience
  • In theory he knows how to physically fight (but in practice this particular iteration of his body is not trained for it and doesn't have the strength or energy or muscle memory to do it very well)
  • Disconcertingly good at understanding people's feelings/fears/motivations/etc (though not necessarily as good at responding to those things)
  • Good with makeup apparently???
