Faire clothes: A very simple light tunic and pants, forced on him by a nice shopkeeper who took offense to his walking around naked.

Age: Appears about 15, actual age is ???

SETTING BACKGROUND

"wow that sure was fucked up" —Zita, on Evangelion 3.0+1.0

The Evangelion franchise deals with the conflict between humanity and mysterious monstrous beings known as Angels. The setting is a somewhat post-apocalyptic version of Earth, largely rebuilt after a cataclysmic event called Second Impact in the year 2000 but still scarred by it. An organization called NERV is fighting off the Angels to prevent another Impact using giant humanoid robots called Evangelion units, which are piloted by teenagers because Reasons. Some people are genuinely trying to preserve humanity, others are secretly trying to cause another Impact for their own reasons, and everything is generally pretty messed up. Shit gets weird and abstract sometimes.

Weirdness that affects only Kaworu: the story of Evangelion "repeats" and he's a timelooper who has experienced countless versions of it, including both the original anime and the Rebuild movies, as well as countless other unspecified variations. Since the Evangelion franchise has tons of different official adaptations and spinoffs, I'm considering them all "canon" from Kaworu's perspective as past timeloops for the sake of fun and me not wholesale headcanoning all of that.

PERSONALITY

Kaworu tends to have a very inhuman feel to him, mostly because (and this should barely count as a spoiler anymore, given the age of the series) he's an Angel. By the rules of the canon, this means something a bit more sinister and threatening to the human race than the normal definition of the word, but Kaworu tends to embody the classic idea of it; he's kind, gentle, patient, and absolutely overflowing with love and understanding. He's an old soul in every sense of the phrase – literally speaking, he's existed for a great many years across many lifetimes, but even those who know nothing about his true nature can tell he seems older than his apparent age. He has an unflappably calm sort of maturity and a poetic manner of speech, neither of which makes him seem at all like a normal teenager, but that's alright because he never seems to be trying all that hard to be "normal" anyway.

Notably, he can seem a bit detached or aloof despite his generally pleasantness. However much he appreciates humanity, he clearly recognizes that he's not truly part of it, and so he hold himself back. He tends to act more as an observer and even speaks more in universal terms than personal ones, like he doesn't believe he has a place among others outside of what's necessary to do what he has to.

Kaworu's very curious, especially where things related to humanity are concerned. He's fascinated by all of mankind's creations and thoughts and loves learning about them, especially creative endeavors. Music is his obvious favorite subject, but he shows an appreciation for other fields as well, like literature and cosmetology. He treats everything with some measure of enthusiasm, overjoyed just to see and understand what humans are capable of thinking and creating and feeling. He doesn't seem to always fully understand everything that humans do and the way the society works – or, more likely, he's just not concerned enough with "fitting in" to do things that seem unnecessary to him.

The most important factor of Kaworu's motivations and growth through the whole franchise is the series' protagonist, Shinji. In Kaworu's own words, meeting Shinji gave his life meaning. He loved Shinji deeply and became determined to bring Shinji real happiness – easier said than done in Evangelion. This canonpoint is actually a weird time in Kaworu's very, very long life. He's spent lifetimes chasing that singlular objective and been through a great deal in pursuit of it. Years of waiting, repeated failure, dying again and again and again. And yet now, at the end of a very long, cyclical story, he's come to terms with the fact that he went about it all the wrong way. He never really understood how to make Shinji happy in the first place, and he was called out as having wanted Shinji's happiness to make him happy. This is the first time he's facing life truly living for himself, and while that great love hasn't faded it's no longer his sole fixation.

As a bit of extra fun, it's noteworthy that while the Angels of Evangelion don't actually have anything to do with religion (despite the series' love of Judeo-Christian imagery and myth), they do all have official angels' names. Kaworu's "true" name is Tabris, the angel of self-determination — a.k.a. free will. Themes of freedom and choice come up a lot where he's concerned in all the various takes on the series, and he's definitely aware of the significance of his name.

Anyway. As a whole, Kaworu is a pretty YMMV experience. For someone like Shinji, who craves unconditional love, Kaworu is a blessedly comforting presence, all easy affection and acceptance. But for most other characters in the series, he often comes across as unsettling or just plain weird. Either way, he's cool with it.

CANON POWERS
  • A.T. Field: An almost impenetrable force-field, generally invisible until impacted. Kaworu is noted as having the strongest A.T. Field among all the Angels, and weaker Angels are seen shrugging off nukes with ease, so we can assume his is even more ridiculous but it's hard to say exactly how strong his is since we've never actually seen anything penetrate it.
  • Levitation
  • Either some kind of telekinesis or ability to manipulate electronics/objects with his A.T. Field, seen being used to unlock the final gate to Terminal Dogma.
  • Evangelion unit shenanigans (can set his synch rate with them to whatever level he wants and can control Eva units even from outside the cockpit)
  • Some kind of sixth sense for souls or something (can detect a nearby presence from like a mile away and can somehow discern the nature of beings once close enough)
  • Timelooping: Somehow seems to be living through an endless cycle of variations of the Evangelion narrative. It's uncertain whether or not he's actually in control of this because the script is extremely ambiguous about it, please don't make me try to explain this shit.

POWER SELECTION

POWER TYPE
Canon Superpowers

FREEBIE POWERS
His weird sixth sense thing possibly? Unsure if it'd count as a mildly enhanced sense, up to y'all!

GAME POWERS
A.T. Field: He'll retain his A.T. Field, though it will be extremely nerfed. It can only function in the protective sense, so none of his other abilities will work even if one interprets them as being functions of the A.T. Field. Since he won't have any offensive abilities at all, it'll still be an extremely strong barrier, but prolonged assaults by very powerful attacks can potentially break through it. If broken, it'll take a day or two for it to function again, during which time he'll be extra vulnerable not just to physical damage but also to other bodily harm like sunburn, illness, and allergies that he's normally protected from.

ABILITIES
  • Can play both the piano and violin very well
  • Speaks Japanese, English and German
  • Bottomless well of patience
  • In theory he knows how to physically fight (but in practice this particular iteration of his body is not trained for it and doesn't have the strength or energy or muscle memory to do it very well)
  • Disconcertingly good at understanding people's feelings/fears/motivations/etc (though not necessarily as good at responding to those things)
  • Good with makeup apparently???

[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: Kaworu Nagisa
Age: Physically 15. That is, his human body is 15 years old, but it's likely that his consciousness as an angel is much, much older.
Gender: Male
Canon: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Timeline: After episode 24 (post-death)

Character History:
Kaworu's page on EvaGeeks

Character Personality:
(Just as a note, I'll be playing Kaworu from the anime series, as there's a fairly significant difference in his portrayal in the anime and various manga serious, but parts of his characterization will likely be supplemented by details from the different manga series and such, because there's only so much to go on based on the one episode he was in.)

Kaworu tends to have a very inhuman feel to him, mostly because (and this should barely count as a spoiler anymore, given the age of the series) he's an Angel. By the rules of the canon, this means something a bit more sinister and threatening to the human race than the normal definition of the word, but Kaworu tends to embody the classic idea of it -- he's kind, gentle, graceful, protective, wise, and highly sympathetic towards humans in general. He comes across as a bit detached, just an observer to all else going on in the world, as before being given a human form it's likely all he could do was watch.

He's incredibly curious, and while he has a sort of spiritual bent for obvious reasons, he's very fond of human beliefs and sciences as well. He's fascinated by all of mankind's creations and thoughts and loves learning about them all, everything from music and the arts to neuroscience and psychology. He treats everything with some measure of enthusiasm, overjoyed just to see and understand what humans are capable of thinking and creating and feeling. He doesn't seem to fully understand everything that humans do and the way the society works, though, likely due to being kept isolated and contained for most of his life, and it leads to a lot of personal bubbles being popped and a good deal of confusion on his end.

Though he was meant to initiate Third Impact and reduce all of humanity into a single consciousness, Kaworu doesn't seem to desire that end, preferring the way humans can grow and change and feel and be hurt and happy and connect with others in the most beautiful ways. He developed a quick attachment to Shinji after recognizing his loneliness and desire to be loved, something so very human and delicate that it fascinated Kaworu, and he loved Shinji unconditionally, in a manner rather befitting of an "angel". Though he loved all of humankind, Kaworu seemed to find it plenty worthwhile to take care of and make just one person happy, and as they were going to sleep the night Shinji stayed over, he said he felt he might have been born just to meet him.

Of major significance to Kaworu's character is his being Tabris, the Angel of Free Will. Even though he was supposed to basically end humanity, he displayed signs of being against it entirely, and was relieved when Shinji came to stop him. He didn't want to destroy the life he'd come to love so much, and so he asked Shinji to kill him. Ironically enough, though he was supposed to embody free will, he had no choice in what he could do while alive under SEELE's command, so he expressed his will in the way he died, by the hand of someone he cared for deeply, and so humankind could live.

Character Abilities you would like to expand on further:
Given how little screentime he got, there obviously wasn't much time spent explaining his powers. Everything he can do, however, is most likely a manipulation of his AT Field, manifesting as something that essentially looks like telekinesis. He's seen using it to levitate, open the lock on a door, block attacks and manipulate Unit-02, so it would seem to have quite a wide variety of uses. He can also synchronize with the Evangelion units to whatever degree he wishes, but whether this is another use of his AT Field of just a result of his being an Angel is unknown.

Beyond his more angelic abilities, Kaworu is intelligent, sympathetic, fluent in at least Japanese and German (but probably every other language as well), and able to play both the violin and the piano (though ironically enough, a lot of people say his humming of the Ode To Joy in episode 24 was way out of tune).

Character Weaknesses you would like to expand on further:
As far as his more supernatural abilities go, he doesn't seem to have any particular weaknesses -- his AT Field is the strongest ever encountered, and he was only defeated because he chose to lose. But socially, he can be a bit clueless -- not so much as his manga counterpart, perhaps, but he's prone to popping personal bubbles. It's likely that he was raised in a SEELE facility in Germany all his life, so he's had minimal human contact in unrestricted settings, and there's only so much that can be learned from books and such. And as cliche as it might be, his compassion is definitely a weakness, as it was his love for Shinji and the rest of humanity that lead to his death.

[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]

What abilities will your character retain in Soul Campaign? He'll be losing his AT Field, obviously, so he's only keeping his wits and his more artistic skills.

What weaknesses will your character lose or gain in Soul Campaign? He'll be much more vulnerable than he's used to without his AT Field, but on the plus side, he'll be alive again, and without the compulsion to initiate Third Impact and destroy the world!

The wish Death the Kid made to the BREW in 2009 was to “rescue Death City and stop the waves of Madness from overtaking the world.” By whatever means necessary. Pretend you are the BREW. Why would you choose to bring this character to Death City?
Besides being incredibly powerful back home, Kaworu is still a useful person to have around for all his intelligence, and would very likely be willing to assist Shibusen's cause simply due to his protective nature and how quick he is to sympathize with people.

If your character has difficulty verbally communicating or can’t verbally communicate at all (mute or non-humanoid), elaborate on how this will be treated in the game. N/A

[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]

Why is your character a Meister and not a Weapon?
The names of angels generally imply that they are the tools of God (the "el" commonly found at the end of their names literally meaning "of God", as a number of examples over here demonstrate). This seems to hold true in Evangelion, and as such Kaworu is also a weapon of God. This could mean that it would be very fitting for him to be a Weapon in Soul Campaign's setting. But the entire message of Kaworu's existence in the series was about choice and free will -- Kaworu worked against his nature and his mission, and chose not to be SEELE's tame Angel. As important as his whole "deciding my fate for myself" thing is, it seemed more appropriate that he be a Meister, rather than anyone else's weapon to use.

What is your character’s Meister Ability? Why?
- Soul Siege (to parallel his AT Field's shielding abilities)
- Calming Wavelength (due to his natural gentleness and serenity)
- Protective Soul (due to his willingness to protect and sacrifice himself for others)

[ SOUL INFORMATION ]

Describe your character’s soul with six adjectives.
compassionate, mysterious, wise, calm, reflective, joyous

What does your character’s soul look like? Be creative.
Kaworu's could would be pure white and considerably large, but fairly simple. It's expression is a relaxed smile, and there's a ring around the top that might look something like a halo.

[ SAMPLES ]

Provide a First Person style sample in the form of a post to the DEMISE network.
[his first post to the network comes a few hours after the tour at shibusen is finished up. being alive and whole here had been a surprise, of course, but it was a pleasant one, and he'd spent a bit of time to himself just wandering and enjoying it. it didn't seem like shinji was here, and that was a bit disappointing, but he's alive and breathing and free of SEELE and NERV and for the first time in his life, he feels truly free.

musing on that, the first few moments of his video post are silent, just a feed of his face while he smiles to himself. he remembers what he was doing quickly enough, however, and begins to speak without shame at his own quiet.]

Hello to everyone here. From what I have witnessed, this is where people prefer to introduce themselves, correct? I am Kaworu Nagisa. The situation here does indeed seem dire, so I would like to thank Shibusen for their hospitality during such dark times. It is very kind of you to provide for us like this, even while dealing with a war.

[he sits back against the couch that cam with his apartment, nodding to himself after considering his own words. that should be enough, shouldn't it? he'd never been allowed to use anything like this while with SEELE, and there hadn't been the time to try anything of the sort during his stay in japan, but if the other posts on the network were anything to go by then it wasn't too difficult to understand the procedures.]

I would be happy to meet anyone here, so at least for the time being, my door is open. I can give you my apartment number, so please stop by if you would like.

[another slight pause to confirm with himself that there was nothing else to add, another smile, and he cuts the feed.]

Provide a Third Person sample set during the last minutes on their world and/or their first few moments in the Kishin Chamber (http://soul-mods.dreamwidth.org/3401.html).
He had not expected to open his eyes again -- not physical ones, at least. Perhaps he would return to his previous state, before he'd taken his human form, and once again be among his siblings and left to watch the world from a distance. But he certainly did not expect for wake up as he'd grown used to over the last fifteen years in a mortal form.

Even less, he hadn't expected to wake up with his head still attached.

Yet here he was, eyes open and head still on his shoulders, and it was dark but he could feel himself whole and alive and breathing. A hand automatically moved to his throat as he sat up, feeling the unmarred skin and remembering the instant of crushing pain that had decapitated him, taken his life and ensured that Shinji could live on. And for a moment, there was an all too human feeling of panic in his chest, wondering at what had become of his friend if he was still alive, wondering if he was in a cell somewhere deep beneath NERV -- or worse, back with SEELE.

But a few quiet moments relieved him of all his fears. He couldn't feel the pull of Adam and Lilith here, even faintly, and he was unable to manipulate his AT Field as he normally could. He felt...well, human, and even if he didn't know how he did know that it meant he wasn't there. Looking around as his eyes adjusted to the dark, he confirmed that this place was nowhere he could recognize, and certainly nothing in the style of either NERVE or SEELE.

So it was a strange, unfamiliar place, but there were worse things for a place to be. He got to his feet gingerly, anticipating any possible pain or soreness but feeling none, and glanced about the room curiously. Before he could wonder at the situation much further, though, a screen he hadn't noticed lit up, and a certain red-haired man began his explanation.

CHARACTER NAME: Kaworu Nagisa
SERIES: Neon Genesis Evangelion
CANON POINT: After Episode 24 (post-death)
APPEARANCE: bam
DESIRED CLASS & REASONING: Blade Brandier; In the anime, Kaworu is only ever shown using his AT Field and some vaguely psychic abilities to manipulate Unit 02 and float around (likely also some manifestation of hiis AT Field). He doesn't really have a particular weapon in canon, but none of the magic classes seem to particularly suit him. In the Gakuen Datenroku spin-off manga, however, his Eva manifested as a sword, and overall the balanced and elegant nature of the class suit him well.

FIRST-PERSON SAMPLE: [here's yet another person foreign to The World, unsure as to what brought them here and looking more than a little out of place. but this one seems at ease despite the situation, casually strolling through the paths of mac anu and smiling at everything, looking relaxed and unanxious and just generally happy to be alive.

which he is, of course. life was amazing, and he'd loved experiencing it, and so while dying had been for the greater good and all, it was rather nice to still be alive. he couldn't feel the instinctual pull towards adam, however faint distance could make it, so there was nothing to worry about here. nothing to do but explore and marvel over everything, wondering vaguely at why he was here but not all the concerned about it. humanity was safe, shinji would live, so if it meant he was here for whatever reason then so be it. it is what it is and all that.

idly, he remarked on the beauty of the island structure that could be seen distantly from the harbor dock, turning with a smile to the person that just happened to be standing next to him, and was didn't seem particularly bothered when they gave him an odd look and walked away -- the lilin had such peculiar and intricate rules to dictate when it was "right" to speak to others. it was fascinating, the variety of reactions that human displayed based on slight changes in circumstance, and he made a mental note to experiment with it further.

it looked like he'd have plenty of time anyway, in this place. he could enjoy it while the world permitted.]
